The project to paint a new mural on the Holman Road underpass continues this weekend, with another community painting party happening on Saturday, May 2.
The mural project, directed by Urban Artworks’ youth mural apprenticeship program, is transforming the underpass at Holman Road and 8th Ave NW. Urban Artworks is a Seattle-based nonprofit that works with young artists across the city to design and paint public murals while gaining hands-on experience in community art projects.
Representative Maisha Barnett told My Ballard that the mural idea dates back to 2023, when she submitted a proposal to improve the 8th Ave NW corridor for pedestrians and cyclists. She had requested lighting, power washing, and painting to improve visibility and access for all.
And now, that project is bringing light and color to the underpass.
Urban Artworks hosted its first painting party last weekend, and they’re gathering again on May 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to continue the project.
“In partnership with the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, supported by the Neighborhood Matching Fund, and guided by the vision of the Crown Hill Village Association and Area Neighbors, this project brings artwork to life by our Base Crew Youth Program,” the event info reads.
The organizers say participants can sign up for as many 90-minute time slots as they’d like, and that it’s open to painters of all skill levels.
