Looking to get out in Ballard this week? Here’s what’s happening in Ballard (and slightly beyond) May 18 to 24.

A highlight this week is the inaugural Ballard Book Crawl at five local bookstores in the neighborhood starting Friday, May 22 and going through Sunday, May 24.

Monday, May 18

  • Historical Hellions Book Club, Swoon City 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
    • Whether you’re dipping your toe into historical romance after watching Bridgerton or have loved the genre for years, there’s a place for you at Swoon City’s Historical Hellions Book Club. We’ll be reading historicals that have a strong lead, and are willing to break with convention. Come laugh, chat, and discuss your favorite romance books with us!

Tuesday, May 19

  • How To Talk To Youth About Alcohol and Vaping, PNW Parent Education on Zoom, 12-1 p.m.
    • Ray Lozano, veteran prevention educator and youth motivational speaker will talk to our community about drug use prevention.
  • Surfrider Seattle Open House with Warm Current, Dirty Couch Brewing, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
    • All are welcome at Surfrider Foundation’s May Open House at Dirty Couch Brewing! We’re co-hosting this meeting with our friends at Warm Current, an organization making surfing more accessible and fun for Native youth on the WA coast. Come learn about their incredible work and how you can support!

Wednesday, May 20

  • Reading the Rainbow Book Club, Swoon City, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
    • Where queer joy is our jam! Every month, we read books that center LGBTQ+ lives and love stories. Our books span all romance subgenres, from contemporary to paranormal to historical. We prioritize queer authors and stay away from big angst and tired narratives. In short: If it’s gay, we’re in.

Thursday, May 21

  • Learn to Crochet: Beginner Crochet Class, Swoon City, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
    • In this class you will learn how to start basic crochet projects. We will go over slip knots, foundation chains, single crochet and double crochets. While we won’t be going over a specific project this class will provide you skills that can be built upon to create a variety of things. You will be provided with a hook as well as 2 balls of yarn so you can keep on crafting at home.
  • Craft Night at Reubens hosted by Britt Garber, Reuben’s Brews, 6-8 p.m.
    • Join local crochet designer, Britt Garber and some crafty friends for a casual craft night at Reubens Brewery! Crafts of all types are welcome. Bring a project to work on, a new WIP to share, or just enjoy being around other crafty people.
  • Movie Screening: Join or Die, Center for Spiritual Living Ballard, 6 – 8:30 p.m.
    • Join or Die is a film about why you should join a club — and why the fate of America depends on it. In this feature documentary, follow the half-century story of America’s civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam, whose groundbreaking “Bowling Alone” research into America’s decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy’s present crisis.

Friday, May 22

  • Ballard Book Crawl, multiple venues, May 22 – 24
    • Join Ballard Books, The Ink Drinker, Secret Garden, Swoon City, and Twice Sold Tales for a weekend of bookish fun in Ballard. Visit each of the stores during the weekend for a chance to win over $300 in prizes.

    Saturday, May 23

    • Leatherworking Workshop, Atria, 6-10 p.m.
      • Join us at Atria for an evening of slow craft and tactile creativity. In this four-hour, beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll learn the fundamental techniques of traditional leatherworking in an intimate setting limited to just 10 participants.

    Sunday, May 24

    • Ballard Farmer’s Market, Ballard Ave, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. (recurring)
      • Open since 2000, The Ballard Farmers Market is Seattle’s first year-round neighborhood farmers market selling produce exclusively from Washington state farmers. The Market has operated along the historic cobblestone stretch of Ballard Avenue NW between Vernon Place and 22nd Avenue.
