Final Route 40 construction work continues in Ballard and Fremont

The Route 40 Transit-Plus Multimodal Corridor Project is nearing completion, with crews working through a final list of construction tasks in Ballard and Fremont.

The Route 40 Transit-Plus Multimodal Corridor Project is a multi-year project intended to make bus service faster and more reliable while improving safety and access along the route. The project includes upgraded bus stops, sidewalks, crossings, signals, and streets in Westlake, Fremont, Ballard, and North Seattle.

The latest work follows earlier Route 40 construction in Ballard, including restriping, sidewalk upgrades, and other improvements along the corridor.

In Ballard, crews will move between several locations to complete sidewalk and pavement repairs, restore landscaping and tree pits, and install or adjust permanent signs and pavement markings.

Final drainage and concrete work is also planned, primarily around NW Leary Way and 20th Ave NW. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) says that work could begin in late September.

Most of the remaining Ballard projects are expected to be brief, with crews moving from one location to another as each task is completed. Access to homes, businesses and transit service will be maintained whenever possible.

In Fremont, construction on a new westbound bus stop on N 36th St between Greenwood Ave N and Phinney Ave N is scheduled to begin Monday, Sept. 14. The work will include sidewalk and driveway upgrades in front of the 7-Eleven gas station and convenience store and is expected to take about two weeks. The sidewalk will be closed and the parking lane restricted during construction.

Crews will also move a pedestrian light near the eastbound bus stop at Fremont Ave N and N 35th St. That work, which could begin in late September, will require removing and replacing a small section of sidewalk behind the stop to reroute underground wiring.

Additional striping and lane changes are planned on Fremont Ave N between N 35th and N 36th streets this fall. The dedicated northbound left-turn lane at N 36th St will be removed, although drivers will still be allowed to turn left from the general traffic lane. SDOT says the change will create more space for loading and unloading and southbound bicycle travel.

While the final work continues, people may encounter temporary lane and parking restrictions, sidewalk detours, driveway impacts, construction equipment, noise, dust, and vibration.
