The Route 40 Transit-Plus Multimodal Corridor Project is entering its final phase, with crews returning to complete finishing work throughout the corridor, including in Ballard, Fremont, Westlake, and North Seattle.
The latest work follows months of construction that included new bus lanes, sidewalk upgrades, and other corridor improvements in Ballard and Fremont. Earlier this spring, crews completed major paving, restriping and sidewalk work in Ballard as the project moved into its final construction stages.
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) says neighbors may notice crews working in areas that previously appeared complete as contractors move through the project’s “punch list,” a final round of inspections and smaller construction tasks before the project is finished.
According to SDOT, this work includes installing signs, restoring landscaping, adding pavement markings, making minor concrete repairs, and completing other finishing touches identified during final inspections.
In Ballard, crews will complete:
- Sidewalk and pavement repairs
- Landscaping restoration, including planting areas and tree pits
- Installation or adjustment of permanent signs and pavement markings
- Final drainage and concrete work
- Removal of temporary construction materials and restoration of work areas
- Some pavement marking work on Market Street and Leary Avenue, which is expected to take place at night
Elsewhere along the corridor, crews will continue final work in Fremont, Westlake, and North Seattle.
In Fremont, work includes final roadway and streetscape improvements, along with a planned relocation of a pedestrian signal near the eastbound North 35th Street bus stop to support future Seattle City Light maintenance. Construction on that work could begin as early as September. SDOT and King County Metro also plan to begin construction in mid-August on a new westbound bus stop on North 36th Street between Greenwood Avenue North and Phinney Avenue North.
Westlake crews will finish sidewalk and concrete repairs, drainage improvements, landscaping and installation of remaining project features such as handrails and bicycle amenities.
In North Seattle, remaining work includes sidewalk repairs, landscape restoration, removal of temporary construction materials and final cleanup.
Most of the remaining work is expected to be fairly quick and will move between locations as crews complete individual tasks. During construction, travelers may encounter temporary lane and parking restrictions, sidewalk detours, driveway impacts, construction equipment, and periodic noise. SDOT says access to homes, businesses, and transit service will be maintained whenever possible.
The Route 40 corridor connects North Seattle, Ballard, Fremont, and downtown Seattle, and the project includes transit, pedestrian, and bicycle improvements along the route.
