Ballard Commons Park outdoor movie canceled due to smoke

The Ballard Alliance has canceled its Aug. 5 planned showing of Top Gun: Maverick at Ballard Commons due to the poor air quality in Seattle.

The current AQI in Ballard is hovering well over 100, due to smoke from fires in eastern Washington and around the northwest.

“We must sadly announce the cancellation of tonight’s showing of Top Gun: Maverick in Ballard Commons Park. We hope to continue our free Movies in the Park series next Wednesday. We will be showing Galaxy Quest and look forward to an out-of-this-world evening with you all. Until then, stay safe and healthy out there, friends!” they wrote on Instagram.

The Ballard Commons Park summer outdoor movie series will continue next Wednesday, Aug. 12 with a showing of Galaxy Quest. Here’s the full schedule:

Organizers say the movies will begin at 6 p.m., and attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, low-profile beach chairs, food, and beverages to enjoy an evening in the park with neighbors.

The movie series is part of Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Park Activation program, which offers free events designed to bring people into public parks and encourage community connections. Established in 2005, the program includes outdoor movies, concerts, fitness classes, cultural events and other activities across Seattle.

Ballard Commons Park is one of 12 parks participating in this year’s citywide Movies in the Park program, which features 26 free outdoor screenings throughout the summer. Seattle Parks and Recreation also partnered on last year’s Ballard movie series, which brought three nights of films to the park.

After the August screenings wrap up, Seattle Parks and Recreation will kick off a citywide Hunger Games movie series in September. The five-film series will rotate through parks across Seattle, including two nearby screenings at Gas Works Park and Woodland Park.

The September schedule includes:

  • Sept. 2: The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes at Bill Wright Golf Course
  • Sept. 9: The Hunger Games at Gas Works Park
  • Sept. 16: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire at Lincoln Park
  • Sept. 23: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 at Woodland Park
  • Sept. 30: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 at Magnuson Park

All screenings are free and open to the public.
