Fremont water shutoffs and lane closures scheduled for July 19–20 as part of Route 40 upgrades

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) are planning two early morning water shutoffs and lane closures on Fremont Ave N this weekend as part of ongoing Route 40 infrastructure improvements.

Water shutoffs and traffic impacts
Water service will be temporarily shut off from approximately 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. on both Saturday, July 19, and Sunday, July 20. Affected buildings are listed on SPU’s water shutoff map below.

During these hours, all northbound lanes of Fremont Avenue N will be closed between N 34th Street and N 35th Street. One southbound lane will remain open throughout the weekend, with the street closure expected to last from about 1 a.m. to 11 a.m. each day.

Crews will be working overnight, and residents in the area should expect construction noise, low-frequency vibrations, dust, bright lighting, and increased traffic from large vehicles. Temporary parking and lane restrictions may also be in place.

The work involves replacing a 100-year-old water main beneath Fremont Ave N as well as sections on Dayton Ave N and N 36th St. SDOT and SPU say coordinating the water and street upgrades will reduce long-term disruptions, lower construction costs, and speed up completion.

Once complete, the upgrades are expected to improve water flow, pressure, and reliability for the neighborhood.

Additional construction along the corridor
Construction activities continue throughout the Route 40 corridor:

  • North Seattle/Holman Rd N: New street markings and signage have been installed, with traffic shifting slightly to accommodate new bus-only lanes.
  • Fremont: Sidewalk demolition and utility upgrades, including waterline work, are ongoing. Signal and crosswalk enhancements will begin soon.
  • Westlake: Crews are upgrading signals, signage, and street lighting, with sidewalk repairs and utility work also in progress.

Bus-only lane updates
New bus-only lanes have been installed in several locations along Route 40 to improve transit speed and reliability:

  • Ballard: Striping and lane markings are complete.
  • Holman Rd N: Striping complete; center turn lane removed for bus lane.
  • Westlake: Striping underway; traffic signals to be installed soon.
  • Fremont: Bus lane striping will occur after construction wraps up in the area.
