After years of discussion, the Alaskan Way viaduct will be replaced by a bored tunnel, reports the Seattle PI. The newspaper is reporting that the city of Seattle, King county and the state have all agreed on the tunnel option.
(See more images and map). According to the paper, “the tunnel would be paid for with roughly $2.8 billion that the state set aside for the project. The surface street elements, including a waterfront park would be paid for by the city. The capital and operating investments in transit would be covered by King County.” The deep-bored tunnel is similar to the “cut and cover tunnel” option Mayor Nickels proposed two years ago. It will have two highway lanes going in each direction with a 50 mph speed limit. Just one month ago the options were narrowed from eight to two, neither of which were the tunnel option.
OK, Ballard, what do you think of the decision?
