Heavy rains leave flooded streets, basements

As much as 3 inches of rain has fallen in Seattle neighborhoods since midnight, “raining so hard it looks like snow,” writes Nora Charles in the Ballard forum.

Catherine sent us this photo of “Lake Crown Hill,” as she calls it, at the new Crown Hill Park at 14th and Holman Road, one of the many pools of standing water around the greater Ballard area. And there are an increasing number of reports of flooded basements.

@Carlman03 sent us this photo. “After clearing out all the water, it was backed up in the garage again 2 hours later. We got a small pump to help,” he writes.

“The fire department is trying to help people out who don’t have pumps, or who have pumps that have failed,” writes Silver, who’s been watching the fire department’s dispatches today. “Lots of traffic accidents and standing water on the roads. Drive with extra care!”

“The heaviest rain is expected through early afternoon. By late afternoon a cold front will slide through the region and that will bring the steady rain to an end,” writes KING 5’s Lisa Van Cise in her forecast.

If you have a photo of flooding, please send it to tips@myballard.com.

Update: Part of Carkeek Park was closed this evening after sewage was discovered running across the Salmon to Sound Trail.

  1. We’ve had two wet-vacs going simultaneously for much of the morning. 2011 is the summer we water-proof our basement, as I expect we’ll see more winters like this in the coming years…

  2. Just checked the bucket on the porch and I got just over 4.5″ in the last 24 hours a couple of blocks from where Catherine’s picture was taken. Quite a rainfall event. Cliff Mass’ new blog article titled “Rain Ending over Puget Sound” was posted at 11:30 AM today, so there may be hope yet. For some reason, links can’t be posted here, but the link would look like this, just replace the asterisks with periods and the — with // : http:–cliffmass*blogspot*com/2010/12/rain-ending-over-puget-sound.html

  3. While I have no pics I do know my sump-pump is running about every 2-3 minutes. Ground a massively saturated. No doubt a few more people will be getting pumps after this weekend too. Sure beats buckets, vacuums, and stress. Good luck to all

  4. This would be a good time to remind all you homeowners out there to NOT rake/blow your leaves into the gutters!! You put all those leaves in the gutter and they clog the storm drains and next thing you know you have flooding. I don’t know why so many people in this town can’t understand this. Then again this is the same town where people can’t handle a little snow and seem to have a habit of driving at night with their lights off.

  5. I’m from a place where we know how to drive in the snow, use our headlights at night and put our leaves in the yard waste bin!

  6. Just today I saw amigos out there blowing leaves into the gutter. Owner of the property gave them $20 while they drove around on a truck going door to door doing the same thing.
