42-unit apartment building planned across from BHS

There are plans in the works to build a new apartment building just across from Ballard High School on NW 65t St.

According to city records, the triplex at 1431 NW 65th St and the five-unit Bon Five apartment building at 1439 NW 65th St would be torn down to create a new 5-story apartment with 42 units.

Previous development plans were for the triplex alone, but the updated plans include a larger building and under new direction. The earlier development plan was led by b9 Architects; Novion Group Architecture is designing the new plans.

Novion has started the community outreach process, providing details about the project online for public comment. The architects launched an online survey for responses and are also accepting comments via email to office@noviongroup.com. You may submit comments through Feb. 28.

The project site is just east of El Camion’s former location, and just west of another recently built complex, the Ship Street Apartments.

El Camion was demolished last year after a fire broke out in the empty building. The site was slated to become a 5-story apartment building, but those plans were canceled in 2020 due to a lack of response to SDCI’s corrections and a $8719.60 overdue balance on the account. It’s not clear what’s next for the corner spot.

Thanks Ian, for the tip!
