After years of planning, Salmon Bay Park has a new and improved playground.
Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) reopened the renovated play area at Salmon Bay Park (2001 NW Canoe Place) earlier this month with a ribbon-cutting celebration scheduled for Sunday, April 27, from 1 to 3 p.m.
The renovation started in September and is based on the “Woodland Explorer” concept, which was selected through community input gathered during the project’s planning phase. The new playground has multiple slides, bridges, platforms, nature-themed play panels, log hops, a climbable whirl, and swings for toddlers, older children, and adaptive needs. The park’s popular zip line remains in place.
“This project brings nature, adventure, and accessibility together in a way that reflects the spirit of Seattle’s parks and nature landscape,” said AP Diaz, Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent. “Salmon Bay Park’s new play area demonstrates how design and community involvement can result in a more inclusive and engaging public space.”
In addition to new play structures, the project includes improved ADA accessibility, as well as the addition of accessible picnic tables and benches. SPR is also partnering with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) to install new bike parking to support easier access for those arriving by bicycle.
The ribbon-cutting event on April 27 is for the public to explore the new play area and learn more about the improvements made to the park.
