Monster art shop changing hands, owners announce final weekend sale

Ballard’s Monster art shop is officially changing hands. The longtime NW Market Street shop, known for its art classes and eclectic selection of gifts, will transition to new owners in early September.

Owners Rosalie and Doug Gale, who also run Ugly Baby at Pike Place Market, announced that this weekend will be their last as shopkeepers. They said Monster will continue operating under the new owners, who plan to keep much of the store’s offerings, though they will not carry the existing clothing and sock merchandise.

The Gales put Monster up for sale in June after running the store for 17 years—first on Ballard Ave and then on NW Market St, where they moved in 2020.

To prepare for the transition, Monster is holding a clearance sale through this weekend, including:

  • All socks for $6
  • $10 t-shirts
  • Sale items an additional 20% off
  • Blind bags at half price
  • 30% off everything else (excluding gift cards and classes)

For customers with existing gift cards: electronic cards will continue to be honored at monstermonster.shop, while physical cards can be redeemed at Ugly Baby in Pike Place Market. The current loyalty program will be discontinued, but remaining rewards will be converted into coupon codes valid on Ugly Baby’s online store.

The Gales said they look forward to focusing on their Pike Place shop and teaching classes in their Pioneer Square studio.
