UW students to share design concepts for potential Ballard waterfront park

A group of local university students has been designing potential concepts for a Ballard waterfront park, and they’re sharing their ideas tonight at the National Nordic Museum.

The University of Washington’s 2025 Scan Design Interdisciplinary Studio is presenting its final design concepts for a publicly owned site adjacent to the 24th Ave NW Shoreline street end. The student work explores how the shoreline location could be reimagined as a public park, offering several potential approaches for future use of the space.

The Ballard Waterfront Park Coalition—which includes Groundswell NW, Friends of Street Ends, Washington Water Trails Association, and local neighbors—is inviting the community to review the concepts and learn more about current advocacy efforts surrounding the site. The coalition has been working to build support for turning the shoreline area into a dedicated public park.

The 24th Ave NW waterfront park project has been ongoing since 2021, when the city included the street end in its Shoreline Street End program, in which streets that dead-end near a shoreline are being revitalized for public use.

The event is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the National Nordic Museum (2655 NW Market St), where attendees can view the students’ final concepts and hear about ongoing community efforts related to the proposed project.
