Kayaker rescue at Ballard Locks leaves one dead

One man died and another was taken to the hospital after a kayaker water rescue at the Ballard Locks on Friday.

Emergency crews responded to a kayaker distress call near the Ballard Locks, according to the Seattle Fire Department. The response took place in the 3200 block of W. Commodore Way, where firefighters were dispatched after reports of a kayaker in trouble. Seattle Fire said crews located a person in the water and sent rescue swimmers into the area.

Firefighters removed the first patient from the water in critical condition. A second adult man was later pulled from the water, and both individuals received medical care at the scene.

Seattle Fire Department officials said the first patient was pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving efforts. The second patient was reported to be in stable condition and was transported to Harborview Medical Center.

Seattle police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
