I made the mistake of driving down to Ballard Market this afternoon (3 p.m. on Christmas Eve), the epicenter of last-minute grocery shopping. The market’s small parking lot was packed, and people were trying to parallel park in both directions down that narrow road just to the north of the store. But Ballard drivers are […]
‘BallardSingles.com’ signs sprouting up
You’ve probably seen those SeattleSingles.com signs around Seattle, but now BallardSingles.com signs are sprouting up around our neighborhood. (I’ll save you the trouble of visiting the site — it’s just a long form asking for all your personal information with the promise of meeting “quality single men and women” in Ballard.) Anyway, I looked around […]
Collective is moving to 20th Ave.
One of Ballard’s coolest shops, Collective, is moving out its Ballard Ave. location on the 31st. In the meantime, they’re throwing a big sale, 35-75% off their vintage furniture pieces. Later in January, they’ll reopen on 20th Ave., near the Ballard Time Shop.
A little Sunset Tavern joke
You may have seen that fake Flickr illustration that made the rounds after the news broke that the Crocodile closed. It showed a high-rise condo built right over the Croc. Now the same guy Photoshopped this one: No, they’re not tearing down the Sunset Tavern. Not even funny.
New fence blocks free parking at QFC
Parking is a headache in central Ballard, to say the least. And it’s only getting worse. Construction crews have built a fence around the boarded-up QFC on 24th Ave., blocking one of Ballard’s most popular free parking lots. Drat! Demolition is scheduled to begin any day now. An eight-story apartment building called “Ballard on the […]
More good press for Ballard Brothers
Last month, a New York Times travel reporter raved about the blackened salmon sandwich at Ballard Brothers Seafood and Burgers on 15th. Now the Seattle PI is writing about it. “Wonderfully moist,” says Leslie Kelly. “(And) the halibut and chips were fantastic.” Get ready for more long lines (especially after the Zesto’s news earlier this […]
City installing sidewalk ramps
Scooting down the sidewalks on 67th Ave NW is becoming easier. The old sidewalks from Division to 9th Ave NW are being cut up to make way for wheel-friendly ramps. While the “No Parking” signs say the project should’ve been completed by now, The City of Seattle Street Maintenance division tells us that the project […]
The story behind Rudy’s Ballard shop
For years, I’ve gone to Rudy’s to get my hair cut. You can’t beat the price. And no appointment necessary. Rudy’s has expanded all over the place, including their latest addition in Ballard at the site of the old Ballard Hardware store (map). Deep in this article in MetropolisMag, two of Rudy’s founders talk about […]
Watch out for drunk shoppers
On Friday night, Yelp is throwing a “drunk shopping” party in Ballard. Much like a pub crawl, people drink a little, shop a little, and then move on to the next place. This ought to be interesting, to say the least. It all starts with hot buttered rum at Dish D’Lish at 7 p.m.
Suicide fence planned for Aurora Bridge
People who work in Fremont in the shadow of the Aurora Bridge will be glad to know that Governor Gregoire has approved $1.4 million to build an 8-foot suicide prevention fence along the bridge. After the Golden Gate, the Aurora Bridge has the second-highest number of bridge suicides in the nation. And those suicide phones […]
Pothole patrol spotted on 8th Ave.
The city of Seattle’s pothole patrol was patching up 8th Avenue at 63rd this morning. (Now if only they could tackle 14th next.) See a problem street? You can submit your pothole report to the city here.
Ballard woman groped by taxi driver
Fresh from the Ballard police reports: a woman who had a little too much to drink called a cab to take her home. The friendly cabbie offered to walk her up to her front door, and when he did, he “touched her inappropriately.” The woman called police and gave a description of the cab. (Nope, […]
