Ballard teachers join the picket line

Seattle educators have officially started their strike today, delaying the first day of school. Seattle Public Schools and the Seattle Education Association (SEA) have spent the last several months trying to negotiate a new contract for the teacher union, but still remain at odds over finalizing their contract. (View negotiation proposals here)

Ballard High School teachers were out in full force, marching along the corner of the school at NW 65th St. and 15th Ave NW.

John Foster is a language arts and maritime academy teacher at Ballard High School. “It feels great. You know I’d much rather be in my classroom, but I’ve never seen anything like the unanimous vote that we had -I got shivers down my spine,” Foster said, referencing the SEA’s vote last Thursday to protest.

“I’m a community member, I have kids in public schools here, and every parent I’ve talked to, gets it,” Foster said as he walked the picket line. “They were for us to begin with but it seems like we have a lot of support in the community this time.”
