Fundraiser launched to help artists after fire damages Ballard Collective

A fundraiser is underway to support artists and small businesses affected by a fire that damaged The Ballard Collective building at 1766 NW Market Street last weekend.

Seattle Fire crews responded at 8:42 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a dumpster fire in the alley of the 1700 block of NW Market Street. Flames from the dumpster extended into the commercial building, prompting a first alarm response. About 55 firefighters worked to get the fire under control by 9:21 p.m., and it was fully extinguished by 9:40 p.m. The building was unoccupied at the time, and the cause has been ruled “undetermined.” Estimated damages are about $70,000.

The Ballard Collective, home to 14 members including working artists, small businesses, and Phase/55 Gallery, sustained significant damage in the fire. According to the fundraiser organizers, studios, tools, supplies, and original artworks were lost, along with exhibitions that were in progress or set to open soon.

The GoFundMe campaign‘s goal is $13,000. Proceeds from the relief fund will go toward replacing equipment and materials, securing temporary workspaces, and helping artists resume their work while plans for rebuilding move forward.

“Thank you for your generosity, your care, and your belief in the power of art to bring people together,” the fundraiser reads.
