Nasty accident on 46th

A vehicle accident around 9:30 on Tuesday night sent at least one (maybe two) people to the hospital. It happened right under 15th Ave. on 46th, just a half block down from Edith Macefield’s house. (Our thanks to My Ballard reader Silver for the tip.)

Cottage homes coming to Ballard

We wrote a couple weeks ago about all the town houses popping up around the neighborhood, and now there are cottage homes — somewhat affordable houses without shared walls but tightly packed together. There’s one project underway at 22nd Ave. and 60th St. (below) and another in the planning stages for 1548 61st St. Prices …

Behind the scenes at ‘Deadliest Catch’ party

Apparently we’re not the only ones who don’t watch “The Deadliest Catch” on the Discovery Channel (we watched a couple early episodes but never got hooked, so to speak.) The Seattle Times “Girl About Town” Pamela Stitt was invited to a private party in West Seattle with the captains from the show. “We were greeted …

It wasn’t a problem until the pool manager recently revealed that lifeguards must be at least 21 years old, not 18, and of course there aren’t many 21-or-over lifeguards. Apparently this …

Ballard High’s fake grass raises concerns

Ballard High School is replacing the natural grass in its athletic field with artificial turf this summer, and the Dateline Earth environment blog is wondering outloud whether that’s a safe move. The blog quotes a new story in USAToday that says fraying artificial turf fields could be contaminated with lead and pose a health hazard.

‘Triple’ opens in cool Ballard Ave. space

The folks who own Market Street Shoes opened another shoe store in Ballard a few weeks ago. Called Triple, it’s located above King’s Hardware and Rudy’s on Ballard Ave. in a very cool, artsy loft. Described as a “new concept sneaker boutique,” Triple features some hard-to-find hipster shoes that won’t break the bank, with many …
